Coffs Harbor City is located on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales. One of Australia’s original holiday destinations on the East Coast, Coffs Harbor attracts families and backpackers from all over the world. Here’s how you can make Coffs Harbor your favourite travel destination.
From Sydney, Coffs Harbor is a 530 km drive north, and from Brisbane, it’s a 350 km south, on the Pacific Highway. Alternatively, you can take the Countrylink from Sydney, passing through Central Coast, Newcastle and Kempsey. There’s a Greyhound Australia service that travels to and fro between Sydney and Brisbane, which makes a stop in Coffs.
The ideal way to explore Coffs Harbor city is to use the Sawtell Coaches and Ryans bus service. You can also avail the local taxi network to travel up and down the Coffs Coast.
Do The Big Banana Thing
Follow tradition and visit the Big Banana fruit on Pacific Highway. Get your family to pose for a picture in front of it, as generations of Australians have previously. Grab some banana cake, bread, choc-dipped bananas, fried bananas and banana smoothies. Kids will love the banana-themed fun rides, ice-skating on the indoor snow slope, fun rides and so on.
Take Helicopter Scenic Flights
Coffs Harbor is more beautiful when watched from a helicopter. You can get a good view of the lovely coastlines, the stunning beaches and rainforests.
Visit the Dolphin Marine Magic (Pet Porpoise Pool)
This pet porpoise pool is located at the end of Orlando Street. It’s the best place for adults and kids to get up close to dolphins and seals. There are dolphin and seal shows each day, along with paid dolphin encounters.
Watch The Birds
Muttonbirds, or shearwaters can be found nesting in great numbers on the Muttonbird Island, which is a peninsula that extends from the marina area. These birds court noisily during November and the chicks are born towards the end of summer.
Visit the Indoor Rainforest
Butterfly House on Strouds Road is a rainforest that contains lots of butterflies. If you’ve ever wanted to wander in a garden of butterflies and wanted them to land on you, this is it. This place also has a nice maze for kids. Don’t miss a visit to the extensive Botanical Garden nearby and the creek-side board-walk that’s set amidst mangroves near the jetty.
Swim At Coffs’ Beaches
Notable beaches are the Park Beach surfing, and a small sheltered beach at the mouth of Coffs Creek which is safe for swimming. There’s another good beach for swimming between the jetty and the wharf.
Go Scuba Diving
The Solitary Island’s marine park is a great place for scuba diving. There are scuba diving tour companies here that specialize in both day and night dive trips.
Go On A Dolphin Or Whale Watching Cruise
You can spot the playful dolphins year-around, but the whale season is from June to November. There are special whale and dolphin cruises that can take you up close to play with the dolphins and watch the majestic whales.
